Football fans witnessed an absolute goal fest and a breathtaking tactical battle at Stamford Bridge in the second week of the Premier League. Chelsea, playing in front of their home fans for the first time under new manager Xabi Alonso, managed to defeat Brighton 4-3 in a highly entertaining clash. The Spanish manager made it two wins out of two, maintaining a perfect start to the season.
The home side started like a storm, opening the scoring in the 4th minute through Romeo Lavia. Chelsea quickly established a comfortable 3-0 lead with stylish back-to-back goals from Pedro Neto in the 14th minute and Joao Pedro in the 32nd minute. However, Brighton had absolutely no intention of giving up. The visitors found hope when Yalcouye scored in the 35th minute. Increasing their pressure in the second half, Brighton reduced the gap to just one goal in the 63rd minute when Joao Pedro unluckily scored an own goal, making it 3-2.
Just as Brighton was pushing for an equalizer, Chelsea's star Cole Palmer stepped up. Finding the net with a classy finish in the 74th minute, Palmer restored the two-goal cushion (4-2) and gave his team a massive sigh of relief. Although Pascal Gross scored deep into stoppage time at 90+6 to make it 4-3, Chelsea successfully held on to claim all three points in this crazy duel. Xabi Alonso passed his first major test at home, receiving great applause from the fans.
