Following England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup's second semifinal, uncertainty over the head coach's future has come to an end. Thomas Tuchel will continue in the role; the German coach retains the backing of the Football Association (FA) and will stay on through Euro 2028. Tuchel is already contracted until 2028 following the two-year extension he signed in February.

The federation's support came in unambiguous terms. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham delivered a clear message at his press conference: "We have a manager who we think is doing a really good job. We do a full review after every tournament; you want to look at how well you've done, who you're drawn against, what the mood in the camp was like, how things were going behind the scenes." Tuchel himself voiced his own resolve at his press conference: "I have a contract until the home Euros, and I'm looking forward to that, even now when it is difficult to look that far ahead."

This support, however, arrives amid a storm of criticism. Facing sharp criticism over his post-goal defensive substitutions — withdrawing Anthony Gordon, replacing Declan Rice with Nico O'Reilly, and Reece James with Dan Burn — Tuchel also found himself at the centre of Wayne Rooney's blunt comments on the BBC: "We have crumbled. It started from the manager and the decisions he made. It was too passive. Against this team, the world champions, you will not get away with it." Despite this, the FA is said to be pleased with the positive environment Tuchel has created — praise from players and a growing rapport with fans.

Historical context also feeds into the debate. England's showing at this tournament repeated a similar pattern of taking the lead and losing seen in the 2018 semifinal against Croatia and the Euro 2020 final against Italy. Tuchel, however, rejected the notion of an "English curse," describing the matter as "a football issue solvable on the pitch" and stressing he does not believe history simply repeats itself.
