A powerful new player has entered one of the summer transfer window's most talked-about winger sagas. According to Ekrem Konur, Chelsea are preparing a €100 million bid for RB Leipzig's young winger Yan Diomande. The development adds Chelsea as the fifth club to the file previously known to involve four major clubs — Liverpool, PSG, Manchester City and Manchester United — and as the one offering the highest bid so far.
The history of the file illustrates just how difficult the fee negotiation has been. A package worth €80m plus €20m previously offered by Liverpool was rejected; Leipzig are said to demand at least €120 million, while other clubs have been unwilling to go above €100 million.
The player's profile explains the intense interest. The 20-year-old Ivorian winger, under contract until 2030, joined from Leganes for around €20 million. Should this transfer go through, it would break Leipzig's club record fee — currently held by Gvardiol's €90 million sale.
Chelsea's move also signals a shift in the club's summer strategy. Having strengthened their defence and midfield, Chelsea now appear intent on making a major investment in attack as well, a shift also reflected in the club's preparations to loan Alejandro Garnacho to Roma.
