INEOS give the green light: Is Berge heading to United?

An unexpected but shrewd name has come to the fore in Manchester United's midfield rebuild. According to TeamTalk, Fulham's Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge has become a serious target for the club following a key meeting between INEOS and head coach Michael Carrick. Sources indicate United believe the Fulham star could be signed for under £40 million, making him one of the most attractive value-for-money options currently on the market.

The profile being sought is quite clear. With a technical midfield trio of Mainoo, Santos and Tielemans, Carrick is said to need a physical defensive presence to balance them out. Standing at 6'5", Berge is reported to fit this role perfectly, capable of serving as the security guard for the defence.

The player's form further strengthens this interest. The 28-year-old, who made headlines with commanding displays as Norway's midfield anchor at the World Cup, also enjoyed a highly impressive campaign in the Premier League last season.

The background to this search is also significant. Casemiro's departure as a free agent and Manuel Ugarte's serious injury made a major midfield overhaul a priority; United are looking to add a third midfielder following the signings of Andrey Santos (£50 million, from Chelsea) and Youri Tielemans (via his £35 million release clause, from Aston Villa). While Berge approaching 29 is seen as a slight concern given INEOS' preference for players in the 22-26 range, the club is reported to be willing to be flexible on this point; names such as Carlos Baleba and Alex Scott also remain on the list.
