LeBron James's career-defining decision expected tomorrow

The NBA's biggest summer waiting game is nearing its final act. According to the report, LeBron James's free agency, which has stretched on for more than two weeks, is now approaching a conclusion; the 41-year-old star is expected to announce his decision during his live podcast appearances at this week's Fanatics Fest event in New York. James is set to record a live episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast with Steve Nash alongside guest host Tyrese Haliburton today (Thursday), while NBA reporter Marc Stein notes that tomorrow's (Friday) appearance could prove at least as significant.

The clearest signal of how close the decision is came from the player's camp. According to NBA reporter Chris Haynes, agent Rich Paul said, "LeBron has all the information he needs, and the decision is now entirely his." Per Haynes, six teams remain in the running: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers.

The weight this decision carries is also unlike any before it. Having informed the Los Angeles Lakers he will not return for a ninth season, James is said to be prioritizing the best fit for what could be his final season over financial considerations this time around. Cleveland is seen as the favourite thanks to the hometown connection, while a pitch from Draymond Green made during a round of golf together has kept the Warriors' chances alive as well. The NBA revealing next season's schedule next month is cited as another reason the league wants to learn James's decision as soon as possible. With one of the likely final major stops of his career just around the corner, the basketball world's attention remains fixed entirely on James.
