Leading French sports outlet L'Equipe has revealed striking details about Karim Benzema's potential return to his former club, Olympique Lyon. The star striker, who decided to leave his Saudi Arabian team (just a quick correction: Benzema played for Al Ittihad, not Al Hilal), was targeted by his boyhood club during the summer transfer window. The French side made an intense effort to reunite with their legendary player for the twilight of his career.
Benzema was also highly enthusiastic about this prospect. Having earned massive income throughout his career, the experienced striker did not demand a high salary. He simply wanted to focus on football and was ready to accept Lyon's offer to return home for a single season. However, an insurmountable bureaucratic obstacle appeared before this historic and emotional comeback. According to L'Equipe, Benzema has an official ambassadorial contract with the Saudi Pro League that is valid until 2030.
This agreement created massive legal and financial hurdles preventing his transfer to a league outside of Saudi Arabia, especially Europe. Benzema's role as a football ambassador within the scope of Saudi Arabia's 2030 vision caused the transfer to be shelved at the last minute, even though the parties were close. The legendary forward's dream of ending his career where it all started has fallen through for now, entirely blocked by the binding nature of his long-term commitments in the Middle East.
